WE MUST INVEST IN REAL EQUITY

HOUSING:

PREVENT AND Reverse displacement

We advocate that current and former Berkeley residents be given preference for affordable housing and a ”right to return” be instituted for those that have been displaced due to rising rents, low income, and no-fault or unfair evictions. When the majority of our unhoused are disproportionately African American, our policies must recognize the systemic racism that has caused this outcome and we must implement strategies to rectify it.

STREETS AND OPEN SPACE:

aDELINE GREENWAY and slow streets

It is time to transform Adeline Street into parks, playgrounds, and plazas that provide healthy outdoor activities and that slow down traffic. When the BART tunnel went through North Berkeley, one of the largest city parks was built- Ohlone Park. When the BART tunnel went through South Berkeley, a predominantly African American neighborhood, a 6-lane roadway designed for 45 mph speeds was built. It is time to right the wrongs of the past.

COMMUNITY:

BLACK arts, culture & business DISTRICT

South Berkeley’s Juneteeth Festival is one of the longest running in California. The Berkeley Flea market provides an affordable venue for many African American businesses and entrepreneurs. South Berkeley has been home to many African American artists. Our economic development strategies must support black-owned businesses, makers, and artists and must work against systemic racism.
